Diocesan School for Girls
Job description
About the role
The Diocesan School for Girls is seeking an experienced Kapa Haka tutor to lead and develop its Senior School Kapa Haka programme for students in Years 7-13. The tutor works with talented young women, sharing knowledge of te ao Māori and helping students build performance skills, confidence and pride in their cultural identity. The school offers excellent practice facilities and a community that values mātauranga Māori.
Key responsibilities

- Teach and develop students' skills in waiata, haka, poi, mōteatea and other Māori performing arts.
- Prepare and lead the group for ASB Polyfest, the major annual performance event, and for internal school events and performances.
- Bring te reo Māori, tikanga and mātauranga Māori to life in rehearsals and performances.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, whānau and the wider Māori community, and create an inclusive, supportive environment.
- Work within an existing bracket of waiata and haka, adding new material and bringing creative direction to the Polyfest campaign.
- Run practices throughout the year, including lunchtime sessions, with about two to three after-school rehearsals per week and one Saturday rehearsal in Term 1; additional rehearsals and performances may be needed.
Required profile
- Ideal experience leading or tutoring Kapa Haka in a school, kura or community setting.
- Strong knowledge of tikanga Māori, kawa and te reo Māori.
- Ability to teach and develop students across a range of Kapa Haka disciplines.
- Ability to build genuine relationships with students, parents, whānau and the wider community.
- Collaborative approach and a commitment to fostering cultural pride and belonging.
What we offer
- $75 per hour.
- Practice facilities and resources, including the gym, pool and landscaped grounds, with on-site parking when available.
- The chance to lead and grow the Senior School Kapa Haka group in a school that values mātauranga Māori.
To apply, use the online application form on the school's employment opportunities page by 10 November 2026.
