About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) in Hawke's Bay is seeking a motivated Junior Criminal Defence Lawyer to join its specialist advocacy team. This position offers the chance to work on a varied caseload of criminal matters, including trials and court appearances, while receiving mentorship from experienced colleagues.

Key responsibilities

• Represent clients in criminal proceedings, from bail applications to trials.
• Prepare legal documents, case files, and evidential material.
• Conduct legal research and draft submissions for court.
• Collaborate with senior lawyers and support staff to develop case strategy.
• Participate in the PDS professional development programme.

Required profile

• Admitted to the New Zealand Bar or will be within two months of application.
• Strong interest in criminal law and justice issues.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Required skills

• Eligibility for a practising certificate.
