Head of the Office of the Chief Executive

About the role

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is seeking a senior public‑sector leader to head the newly established Office of the Chief Executive. Reporting directly to the Secretary for Economic Growth and Chief Executive, you will act as a trusted strategic partner and ensure the Chief Executive’s agenda is executed effectively across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality strategic advice to the Chief Executive and filter/escalate information as required.
• Maintain situational awareness across MBIE, acting as an escalation point for critical issues.
• Build and sustain strong relationships with senior staff across government and anticipate emerging requests.
• Support coordinated, high‑quality engagement with Ministers and other stakeholders.
• Lead, develop and manage a high‑performing team of advisors and a Director of Strategic Communications.
• Oversee emerging, sensitive, or high‑impact issues and ensure appropriate response.
• Represent the Chief Executive as a delegate when needed.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in the public sector with deep knowledge of government machinery.
• Strong analytical credibility, political astuteness and the ability to operate at the highest decision‑making levels.
• Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships and navigate sensitive issues.
