Geospatial Software Developer Research Assistant

About the role
We are seeking an early‑career software developer to join the Geospatial Research Institute in Christchurch. You will work closely with researchers to translate complex research questions into practical software solutions, focusing on large spatial datasets and emerging geospatial technologies, including an analytical digital twin of Antarctica.
Key responsibilities
- Design and develop software solutions for multidisciplinary geospatial research projects.
- Collaborate with researchers to analyse spatial data and support research objectives.
- Deploy, maintain, and document research software and associated systems.
- Contribute to research proposals, collaborative projects, and publications where appropriate.
- Share expertise through training sessions, workshops, and collaborations with partners.
- Represent the Institute at workshops, conferences, and research events.
Required profile
- Qualification in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Collaborative, curious developer who enjoys applying technology to complex research challenges.
- Ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Alignment with the Institute’s values and a commitment to an inclusive work environment.
Required skills
- Experience developing software, preferably with geospatial data or spatial analysis.
- Strong programming skills in Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, or similar languages.
- Familiarity with Linux/Windows environments, cloud computing, and containerisation.
- Interest or experience in large spatial datasets, geospatial AI, or scientific computing.
