Financial Accountant

About the role

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is looking for a Financial Accountant to join its Financial Accounting Team in Wellington. You will be responsible for month‑end processing, balance‑sheet reconciliations and ensuring the accuracy of the Crown’s financial results.

Key responsibilities

• Complete month‑end close activities and prepare General Ledger balance‑sheet reconciliations for the Crown and the department.
• Clear outstanding items and validate results through a multi‑layered peer‑review and sign‑off process.
• Provide expert advice to improve financial accounting practices and increase understanding across the ministry.
• Identify and implement process improvements, control enhancements and risk‑management measures.

Required profile

• Proven experience in financial accounting within a medium to large organisation.
• High professional standards and performance‑driven attitude.
• Ability to communicate technical information clearly in plain language.
• Knowledge of the public sector financial environment, including the Public Finance Act and Treasury guidelines.
• Chartered Accountant qualification or progress towards full qualification.
• Legal right to live and work in New Zealand and willingness to undergo a credit check.

Required skills

• Technical accounting knowledge of PBE IPSAS.
• Technical accounting knowledge of PBE IFRS.
• Understanding of NZ GAAP accounting standards.
