Director Stakeholder Communications

About the role

The Director Stakeholder Communications will lead the Communications and Engagement function for New Zealand Customs, shaping how the organisation connects with internal and external audiences. This permanent, full‑time role is based in Wellington and reports to senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

• Define and execute the strategic direction for internal and external communications, stakeholder engagement, media relations, channels, events and ministerial servicing.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to drive strategic priorities, strengthen organisational alignment and manage reputational risk.
• Lead, coach and develop a high‑performing communications team, fostering collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Shape Customs’ strategic narrative and guide engagement with key stakeholders, including international partners and government ministers.
• Use data, insights and digital approaches to inform decision‑making and improve communication effectiveness.

Required profile

• Senior leadership experience in communications, stakeholder engagement, media and ministerial servicing.
• Strong understanding of the public‑sector context, government processes, political neutrality and reputation management.
• Proven ability to develop and implement strategy in complex, politically sensitive environments.
• Demonstrated people‑leadership capability, including coaching senior leaders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
