Director of Education – Nelson, Marlborough & West Coast

About the role

The Director of Education will lead Ministry of Education services across the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast regions. This permanent, senior position is responsible for shaping an equitable and high‑performing education system that enables every learner to succeed.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and accountability for regional education performance.
• Coordinate collaboration between the Ministry, education providers and community stakeholders.
• Drive implementation of government education priorities with speed and purpose.
• Develop locally informed solutions that improve achievement, equity and outcomes for tamariki and rangatahi.
• Lead a team of 17 regional leaders and oversee delivery of equity, access and support services.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in a large, complex organisation, preferably in service delivery.
• Proven track record in change leadership and managing multiple programmes.
• Deep understanding of educational achievement levers and challenges.
• Demonstrated success delivering equitable outcomes for Māori, Pacific peoples and learners with special needs.
• Strong engagement, communication and ability to apply Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
