Director, Māori Agribusiness

About the role

The Director, Māori Agribusiness provides strategic and operational leadership for the Māori Agribusiness Directorate within the Ministry for Primary Industries. Reporting to the Deputy Director‑General Māori Partnerships & Investment, the role sits on the MP&I Leadership Team and is based in Wellington, with domestic travel required to support regional coverage.

Key responsibilities

• Set and communicate a clear strategic direction focused on economic growth and outcomes for Māori in the primary sector.
• Oversee a substantial annual investment portfolio, ensuring strong governance, clear expectations and alignment to outcomes.
• Lead and develop a geographically dispersed team, fostering a high‑performing, cohesive culture.
• Strengthen frameworks to measure performance, track outcomes and communicate impact.
• Provide reliable intelligence on Māori‑related issues to inform MPI strategy and policy.
• Build and maintain strong relationships across Māori entities, primary‑sector organisations, government agencies, NGOs and regional partners.

Required profile

• Experienced senior leader with a proven track record at director level.
• Deep understanding of both Te Ao Māori and the public‑sector environment.
• Credibility and confidence to operate authentically across iwi, industry and government settings.
• Ability to connect priorities, people and systems to achieve impact at scale.
• Full New Zealand driver’s licence and willingness to travel domestically.
