Director, AML/CFT – Lead New Zealand’s Integrated Regulatory System

About the role
The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is creating a new senior leadership position to become New Zealand’s single AML/CFT regulator. The Director will shape and oversee the nation’s integrated AML/CFT strategy as responsibilities shift from the Financial Markets Authority and the Reserve Bank.
Key responsibilities
- Steward and deliver New Zealand’s national AML/CFT strategy.
- Establish and lead a consolidated AML/CFT regulatory unit (initially 45 staff, with growth expected).
- Direct regulatory operations, intelligence‑led supervision, and risk‑based interventions.
- Oversee the transition and integration of AML functions into DIA while ensuring system continuity.
- Provide advice and assurance to Ministers and senior government officials.
- Build strong relationships across government, the financial system, reporting entities, and international partners.
Required profile
- Proven senior leader with experience managing large, complex regulatory or operational functions through change.
- Deep understanding of risk, intelligence, regulation, and enforcement systems.
- Credibility within government and the financial or banking sector, including international engagement.
- Strong judgement, resilience, and confidence to navigate contested regulatory conversations.
