Design Engineer – Structures

About the role

Downer is looking for a skilled Design Engineer to join its National Operations and Strategy team in Christchurch. You will work on a variety of impactful structural projects, delivering innovative solutions from concept through to construction while ensuring safety, sustainability and buildability.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver structural designs for permanent and temporary works, including bridges, civil, commercial and industrial structures using reinforced concrete, steel, timber and masonry.
• Provide technical supervision on‑site to ensure designs are implemented accurately, safely and with minimal rework.
• Engage with clients and stakeholders, building strong relationships and identifying business development opportunities.
• Prepare detailed documentation – design reports, calculations, drawings and specifications – in line with industry standards and NZ design codes.
• Promote a Zero Harm culture, emphasizing safety and sustainability in all activities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
• Proven experience in structural engineering design and project management.
• Excellent problem‑solving and analytical abilities.
• Strong commercial understanding and knowledge of NZ design codes.

Required skills

• AutoCAD (or similar CAD software).
