Data Platform Engineer

About the role

Our client, a well‑established operation in Queenstown, is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to own and evolve their cloud‑first Microsoft data environment. The role combines strategic architecture with hands‑on implementation, ensuring the platform reliably supports reporting and analytics across the business.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and evolve the core cloud data platform on Azure, including Microsoft Fabric and related services.
• Design, build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines and data integrations across multiple business systems.
• Support database architecture, performance tuning and optimisation for Azure SQL and Managed Instances.
• Develop and maintain Power BI architecture and semantic models for reporting teams.
• Establish and enforce data governance, quality and access‑management frameworks.
• Monitor, alert and ensure the reliability of production environments, taking ownership of overall platform health.
• Identify and implement automation opportunities to simplify operations and improve efficiency.

Required profile

• Strong hands‑on experience with Azure data services such as Azure SQL, Managed Instances, Data Factory, Data Lake and Cosmos DB.
• Advanced SQL development skills and solid grounding in database administration.
• Experience with data‑warehousing, lake‑house architectures and dimensional modelling.
• Proficiency in Power BI architecture and performance optimisation.
• Ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with Python (or similar scripting), CI/CD practices and Infrastructure‑as‑Code approaches.
