Data Engineer – FinTech

About the role

We are looking for a Data Engineer to build, maintain and improve the data pipelines and datasets that power analytics and decision‑making at Smartly, a fast‑growing FinTech serving over 20,000 Kiwi businesses.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and optimise SQL‑based and Python data pipelines that ingest, transform and serve data from core product systems and third‑party sources.
• Create and maintain well‑modelled analytical datasets for reporting, dashboards, experimentation and data‑science use cases.
• Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, product and engineering teams to translate data requirements into reliable, reusable assets.
• Monitor pipeline health, resolve data‑quality issues and implement basic observability and testing.
• Contribute to data documentation, CI/CD workflows and continuous improvement of data tooling in a cloud environment.

Required profile

• 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering or a similar role.
• Hands‑on attitude with a strong focus on reliability and scalability.
• Comfortable working with modern software‑engineering practices and AI‑assisted development tools.

Required skills

• Advanced SQL (complex, performant queries).
• Python for data transformation, automation and pipeline development.
• Version control with Git.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing.
• Experience operating data systems in a cloud environment.
