About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore office in Albany. As a PAL1 Lawyer, you will provide high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients and contribute to a collaborative, supportive team.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive defence representation for a varied caseload of criminal matters.
• Manage case files, conduct legal research, and prepare court submissions.
• Support intermediate and senior lawyers through mentorship and knowledge sharing.

Required profile

• Hold a PAL1 approval level and be qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated ability to build credibility with judges, peers, and the wider legal community.
• Strong passion for criminal justice and empathy for a diverse client base.
• Willingness to collaborate, share expertise, and engage in continuous learning.
