Community Guardian – 24/7 Support at Te Mātāwai

About the role
The Hapori Kaitiaki (Community Guardian) is the first point of contact for tenants, visitors and the wider community at 139 Greys Avenue. Working on a 24/7 rotating roster, you will help create a safe, welcoming environment and support the wellbeing of residents in New Zealand’s first single‑site supported housing development.
Key responsibilities
- Provide frontline care, information and support to customers, tenants and visitors.
- Work rotating day and night shifts as part of a 24/7 on‑site team.
- Engage with the on‑site Lead Support Provider, Kāinga Ora groups and external stakeholders.
- Recognise emerging situations, de‑escalate emotional interactions and know when to escalate to external support.
- Maintain a healthy, inclusive environment for a culturally diverse community.
Required profile
- Proven experience supporting customers with challenging housing or wellbeing needs.
- Ability to work rotating day and night shifts.
- Strong observational and analytical abilities to understand and resolve issues empathetically.
- Experience working with diverse cultures and community groups.
- First Aid certification and safety/de‑escalation training are advantageous (training provided if needed).
Required skills
- First Aid certification.
- Safety Intervention or De‑escalation certification.
