Commercial Building Inspector

About the role

This permanent position offers real scope within a stable, experienced team that supports professional development and long‑term career growth in building control. You will work on a variety of commercial and complex projects, including new builds, alterations, public‑facing developments, fire and accessibility considerations, and occasional residential work.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct inspections to verify compliance with approved plans, the Building Code and relevant legislation.
• Support nationally significant grocery consenting work and other commercial projects.
• Apply sound technical judgement to resolve compliance matters and achieve safe, practical outcomes.
• Collaborate with in‑house engineering specialists (fire, civil, structural, mechanical/HVAC, geotechnical) to test ideas and address technical issues.
• Provide clear, professional advice to builders, designers, engineers and other stakeholders.
• Prepare accurate inspection records and contribute to evidence‑based decision‑making.
• Develop capability through mentoring, training, competency assessment and exposure to varied work.

Required profile

• Applicants at any stage of a building‑control or broader construction career are encouraged to apply.
• Commercial inspection experience is valuable but not mandatory; strong building‑related experience is essential.
• Backgrounds may include commercial or residential building inspection, construction supervision, design/drafting, plumbing, drainage or site coordination.

Required skills

• Regulation 18 qualification (or willingness to achieve it with support).
• Existing BCA competency or equivalent relevant experience.
• Demonstrated experience in the New Zealand building industry.
• Practical understanding of building work and compliance with the NZ Building Code.
