Chief Executive – New Plymouth District Council

About the role

The Chief Executive will lead New Plymouth District Council, one of New Zealand’s most progressive local authorities, at a time of major transformation in local government. This role combines strategic vision with hands‑on leadership to shape the future of public service delivery, regional collaboration and community wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the council through ongoing reforms and define how a modern council responds to changing expectations.
• Drive regional collaboration, infrastructure investment and economic‑growth initiatives.
• Champion climate‑resilience, sustainability and partnership with iwi and mana whenua.
• Strengthen democratic processes, community engagement and value‑for‑money service delivery.
• Represent the council nationally, influence policy and build high‑impact partnerships.

Required profile

• Extensive senior leadership experience in a public, infrastructure, utility, commercial or purpose‑driven organisation.
• Proven track record of guiding complex organisations through change.
• Deep understanding of local‑government operations and reform processes.
• Ability to navigate uncertainty and turn it into opportunity.
• Strong communication and stakeholder‑engagement capabilities.
