Casual Veterinary Program Assistant

About the role

The Hamilton Zoo is looking for a Casual Veterinary Program Assistant to support the Nutrition Centre and Veterinary Clinic. Working under the Head Nurse – Veterinary Program, you will help ensure high‑quality animal care, biosecurity and smooth operation of the nutrition centre.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Nutrition Centre Specialist with coordinating, monitoring, sourcing, preparing and ordering nutritional supplies for the animal department.
• Support the Head Nurse – Veterinary Program in delivering animal care through hospital husbandry and biosecurity for imports and exports.
• Follow operating procedures, diets and minimum husbandry standards as directed by team leaders.
• Maintain thorough and timely written records and raise any issues to the Head Nurse promptly.
• Adhere to Health and Safety policies to provide a safe environment for staff and visitors.

Required profile

• Full NZ driver’s licence.
• Good standard of fitness.
• Experience in animal husbandry and understanding of zoo industry practices.
• Strong time‑management skills and ability to work to schedules.
• Basic computer proficiency.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities with diverse stakeholders.
• Self‑awareness and a mindset focused on continuous performance improvement.
