Business Accounting Manager

About the role

The Business Accounting Manager leads a high‑performing finance team that translates conservation strategy into measurable outcomes. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will provide strategic financial advice, governance and commercial insight to operational leaders across the Department of Conservation.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of Business Accountants delivering financial planning, budgeting and performance reporting.
• Partner with Operations Directors and managers to provide strategic insight that supports decision‑making and organisational performance.
• Drive continuous improvement of financial systems, processes and service delivery.
• Ensure robust financial governance through business case assurance, compliance monitoring and risk management.
• Build strong relationships across the department and support meaningful engagement with Māori.

Required profile

• Chartered Accountant qualification or equivalent professional accounting credential.
• Significant experience in financial leadership within a government or large‑scale organisation.
• Proven track record of leading inclusive, high‑performing teams.
• Strong strategic thinking, commercial acumen and ability to influence senior leaders.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to public service.

Required skills

• SAP or similar ERP platform.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel.
