Animal Services Officer

About the role

The Animal Services Officer joins Tauranga City Council’s Animal Services team to help keep the community safe and promote responsible animal ownership. This full‑time, field‑based position involves responding to complaints, investigating incidents, and engaging with residents across Tauranga.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate complaints such as dog attacks, roaming stock, and noisy roosters, ensuring each case is handled fairly and to a high legal standard.
• Provide evidence in Court when required.
• Engage with residents, resolve issues, and support responsible dog ownership through education and community events.
• Use a council‑provided vehicle as the primary work base and operate digital systems to record enquiries and outcomes.
• Assist a veterinarian with euthanasia of animals that cannot be rehomed, when necessary.

Required profile

• Confident communicator able to build rapport with a wide range of people and stay calm in challenging situations.
• Independent worker with strong conflict‑management and resolution‑focused approach.
• Strong affinity for animals and resilience to emotionally difficult situations.
• Helpful but not essential: National Certificate in Compliance and Regulatory Control and experience in compliance, regulatory or enforcement roles.

Required skills

• Full Class 1 driver licence.
• Proficiency with digital systems for field data entry and case management.
