Principal Landscape Architect – Public Realm

About the role

Auckland Council is seeking a Principal Landscape Architect to lead public realm and place‑shaping outcomes across the city. You will join a collaborative, design‑led team delivering innovative landscape architecture and urban design solutions for high‑profile projects.

Key responsibilities

• Lead public realm design from strategic visioning through detailed design.
• Prepare project briefs, procure consultants and manage multidisciplinary design teams.
• Provide expert technical advice on development proposals, infrastructure projects and public realm outcomes.
• Review external design proposals and negotiate outcomes with developers, consultants and stakeholders.
• Present design recommendations and influence strategic urban design decisions across council programmes.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in landscape architecture and public realm design.
• Proven ability to work across multidisciplinary teams on complex urban projects.
• Strong communication skills to present ideas and influence stakeholders.
• Commitment to delivering resilient, people‑focused urban environments.
