About the role
The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking a motivated Junior Criminal Defence Lawyer to join its specialist criminal advocacy team. You will work on a varied caseload that includes trials, court appearances, and client consultations, gaining hands‑on experience in criminal law.
Key responsibilities
- Provide high‑quality legal advice and representation in a full range of criminal matters.
- Prepare and present cases at trial and other court appearances.
- Manage a diverse docket of cases, ensuring timely and effective service to clients.
- Collaborate with senior lawyers and mentors to develop advocacy skills.
Required profile
- Admitted to the New Zealand Bar or will be within two months of application.
- Strong passion for criminal justice and a desire to build a career in criminal law.
- Team‑oriented mindset with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to build credibility with judges, peers, and the wider legal community.
