Emergency Medical Call Taker – Wellington Free Ambulance

About the role

As an Emergency Medical Call Taker you will be the first voice people hear when they dial 111 in a crisis. You will work in a fast‑paced call centre, staying calm and focused while guiding callers through life‑threatening situations.

Key responsibilities

• Answer 111 emergency calls and assess the nature of each incident.
• Provide clear, empathetic instructions and dispatch appropriate ambulance services.
• Document call details accurately in the communications system.
• Handle high‑stress scenarios including suicide, cardiac arrest, and childbirth.
• Work a structured shift pattern of two 12‑hour days, two 12‑hour nights, followed by four days off.

Required profile

• Ability to remain composed under pressure and make rapid decisions.
• Strong communication skills with empathy for distressed callers.
• Resilience to work long shifts, including overnight periods.
• Commitment to the shift schedule and to ongoing training.
