Deputy Registrar – Senior Leadership Role in Medical Regulation

About the role

The Medical Council of New Zealand is seeking an experienced Deputy Registrar to join its senior leadership team. This role supports the statutory functions of the Council under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, helping safeguard public health and uphold professional standards across the medical workforce.

Key responsibilities

• Work with the Registrar to discharge statutory functions under the HPCAA.
• Provide leadership and oversight of regulatory operations, including standards, competence, fitness‑to‑practice and registration.
• Lead complex regulatory matters, case management and risk assessment, especially sentinel‑level cases.
• Interpret and apply legislation, policy and regulatory frameworks to ensure fair and consistent decisions.
• Build and maintain relationships with doctors, employers, government agencies and professional bodies.
• Support Council committees, panels and governance processes, and contribute to policy development and operational improvement.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership and advisory experience in a regulatory, legal, health, government or professional standards environment.
• Legal background, preferably in public law, medico‑legal or healthcare‑related fields.
• Ability to act as a trusted advisor and subject‑matter expert on regulatory matters.
