Senior Systems Engineer

About the role

Datacom’s Infrastructure & Operations team is looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation and maintenance of the company’s corporate technical environment across New Zealand. You will work on a hybrid schedule, collaborating with engineering peers, vendors and customers to ensure reliable, secure and high‑performing systems.

Key responsibilities

• Operate, maintain and continuously improve Datacom’s hardware, software and cloud infrastructure.
• Design and deliver solutions that meet Service Level Agreements and customer requirements.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship and expertise to engineering teams.
• Manage vendor relationships and escalation processes.
• Install, test and maintain operating systems, firmware and system software for assigned projects.
• Participate in technology road‑mapping, product testing and feedback loops.
• Monitor system performance, conduct capacity analysis and implement improvements.
• Analyse user requirements and advise on systems design.
• Execute change requests following Datacom’s change‑management standards.
• Promote health, safety and security best practices in daily operations.

Required profile

• Minimum 6 years of experience in server management within professional or managed‑services environments.
• Strong knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
• Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms such as Azure and AWS and with virtualization technologies.
• Proven ability in system monitoring, patching, firmware updates and security management.
• Experience scripting and automation using PowerShell or similar tools.
• Excellent analytical, consultative and problem‑solving skills.
