Ranger Project Lead Heritage and Visitors

About the role

Join the Department of Conservation as a Ranger Project Lead, overseeing heritage and visitor projects in the rugged backcountry of Franz Josef. You will work hands‑on to protect historic sites, maintain tracks, huts and amenities, while leading a dedicated team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead assigned heritage and visitor projects, including historic site restoration, track work, and hut/amenity maintenance.
• Provide field leadership and day‑to‑day oversight of the Heritage and Visitors team.
• Offer technical advice, mentorship and guidance to develop team capabilities.
• Manage contracts and ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental standards.
• Build and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
• Spend extended periods (up to 10 days) in remote, rugged terrain to deliver project outcomes.

Required profile

• Practical field skills such as chainsaw operation, scrub bar work and basic carpentry/building.
• Experience leading projects from planning through delivery and reporting.
• Ability to mentor and develop others.
• High level of physical fitness and backcountry experience.
• Valid driver’s licence with manual transmission capability.
• Commitment to health, safety and wellbeing.

What we offer

• Salary range $68,878 – $87,265 per year.
• DOC rental accommodation available if required.
