Ranger – Heritage & Visitor Site Maintenance (Hanmer Springs)

About the role

The Department of Conservation is seeking a dedicated Ranger to join its North Canterbury team. Based in Hanmer Springs, you will work primarily in the field, supporting the care and maintenance of heritage and visitor sites across the region, including St James, Lake Sumner and Lewis Pass.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and preserve historic sites, campsites, picnic areas, car parks, toilets and water supplies.
• Assist with construction, repair and upkeep of visitor infrastructure and back‑country tracks and huts.
• Operate chainsaws, scrub‑bars, backpack sprayers, diggers and other minor earth‑moving equipment (training provided).
• Perform basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical tasks as required.
• Enter data, plan field trips and support office administration.
• Live and work in remote back‑country locations for up to five consecutive nights, typically twice a month.

Required profile

• Confident communicator who works well both independently and as part of a close‑knit team.
• High level of physical fitness and proven back‑country experience.
• Strong focus on health, safety and wellbeing.
• Current full NZ driver’s licence (Class 1 or above).
