Electronics Hardware Engineer – R&D Sustaining Engineering

About the role

ABB’s Critical Power division in Napier is seeking an Electronics Hardware Engineer to join the R&D Sustaining Engineering team. You will ensure the reliability and long‑term sustainability of UPS systems and power protection equipment, working onsite with cross‑functional teams.

Key responsibilities

• Lead sustaining engineering activities to maintain performance of electronic components across the critical power portfolio.
• Manage component lifecycle, supplier qualification, and obsolescence, collaborating with Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain and Quality.
• Conduct root cause analysis, failure investigations and translate findings into product improvements.
• Maintain compliance with industry standards (UL, IEC, RoHS, REACH) and support engineering change and product lifecycle processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechatronics Engineering with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
• Strong background in component engineering, product engineering and obsolescence monitoring.
• Proven ability to work with global suppliers and cross‑functional teams.
• Excellent analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills.

Required skills

• Component lifecycle management and obsolescence monitoring.
• Root cause analysis methodologies (8D, RCA, FMEA, Six Sigma).
• Experience with SAP, Windchill PLM and ERP systems.
• Knowledge of industrial power electronics, UPS technology and relevant standards (UL, IEC, RoHS, REACH).
