Rural Generalist – Senior Medical Officer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Medical Officer to join our Rural Generalist team on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island. The role involves delivering a broad range of clinical services to a dispersed population of about 32,500 across remote communities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide primary, urgent and emergency care in a rural hospital setting.
• Deliver general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and obstetrics/gynaecology services.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists (psychiatry, anaesthetics, surgery) and external “TransAlpine” partners.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and community health initiatives.
• Support training and mentorship of junior clinicians and trainees.

Required profile

• Vocational registration such as FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP.
• Eligibility to register with the New Zealand Medical Council.
• Interest in pursuing or holding dual fellowship qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience in a broad clinical scope, preferably in rural settings.

Required skills

• Clinical competence across primary care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and obstetrics/gynaecology.
• Ability to work effectively in a flexible, multidisciplinary team.
