Financial Trader – Renewable Energy Markets

About the role

Meridian is New Zealand’s largest renewable electricity producer and its trading team plays a critical role in extracting value from a diverse renewable portfolio. As a Financial Trader you will support the Origination team, blending market insight, data analysis and trade execution in a fast‑moving environment.

Key responsibilities

• Execute electricity derivatives trades in real time and respond to market movements.
• Shape trading positions to support or lead hedging strategies that improve portfolio performance.
• Monitor risk and exposure, balancing opportunity with disciplined risk management.
• Transform market, portfolio and customer data into actionable insights.
• Identify early market trends and understand the drivers behind price movements.
• Improve trading tools, systems and processes, working closely with Digital and Data teams.
• Contribute to pricing, deal structuring and product development.
• Build strong relationships across the business to support commercial decisions.

Required profile

• Experience in trading, finance, energy markets or a strong analytical field.
• Excellent numerical thinking and comfort working with data to make rapid decisions.
• Good judgement, problem‑solving ability and capacity to work independently.
• Clear communication skills and ability to translate complex concepts into practical actions.
• Collaborative mindset with a focus on building trust across teams.
