Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL2) – Public Defence Service

About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking a motivated and experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore – Albany office as a Lawyer PAL2. You will provide high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients, manage a varied criminal caseload, and support both intermediate and senior lawyers.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients.
• Manage a varied caseload of criminal matters.
• Provide support to intermediate and senior lawyers.
• Assist in coaching and mentoring junior lawyers.

Required profile

• Hold a PAL2 approval level and be qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
• Passionate about criminal justice issues.
• Confident in developing credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
• Empathetic and able to relate to a wide range of people.
