Senior Solicitor – Government Legal Team

About the role

The Treasury is looking for an experienced Senior Solicitor to join its legal team. You will work on high‑profile matters that influence New Zealand’s economy and provide strategic legal advice across a range of complex issues.

Key responsibilities

• Provide independent, solution‑focused legal advice to senior ministers, Crown CEOs and other government decision‑makers.
• Advise on commercial transactions, finance and capital markets, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, complex statutory regimes and general public and commercial law matters.
• Draft, review and negotiate contracts, policy documents and legislative instruments.
• Collaborate with other legal colleagues and client teams to develop coherent legal strategies.
• Mentor and support the development of junior team members.

Required profile

• Qualified solicitor with at least 5 years of post‑qualification experience.
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex legal issues and provide clear, plain‑language advice.
• Strong strategic thinking, sound judgement and political awareness.
• Comfortable working in ambiguous or evolving environments.
• Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.

Required skills

• Expertise in commercial law, finance law, capital markets, and statutory interpretation.
• Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in government policy.
• Proficiency in drafting and negotiating legal documents.
