Senior Electrical Systems Engineer (BESS)

About the role

ABB is seeking a Senior Electrical Systems Engineer to lead hardware design and development of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) at its Napier engineering hub. The role contributes to the Critical Power product group and supports global mission‑critical applications.

Key responsibilities

• Lead hardware design and development of BESS and UPS, including low and medium‑voltage energy management systems.
• Perform electrical design activities such as cable and harness dimensioning, routing, layout, and selection of protection devices, sensors and power supplies.
• Conduct functional, performance and safety testing to ensure compliance with IEC/UL standards.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, test procedures, commissioning guides and user manuals.
• Plan and execute system commissioning on customer sites, including inspections, power‑up sequences and performance optimisation.
• Troubleshoot electrical faults, power‑quality issues and system performance problems, providing improvement strategies and technical guidance.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years experience designing and maintaining power electronic systems, with strong knowledge of three‑phase systems and power converters >200 kW.
• Solid understanding of grid compliance, power‑quality standards, EMC principles and thermodynamics for equipment reliability.
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Electronics Engineering; postgraduate qualifications are a plus.
• Strong English communication skills and ability to collaborate across multi‑site engineering teams.
