Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL2) – Public Defence Service

About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore – Albany office as a Lawyer PAL2. You will provide high‑quality defence representation to legally aided clients and contribute to a collaborative, supportive team.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver defence representation for a varied caseload of criminal matters.
• Support intermediate and senior lawyers with case preparation and strategy.
• Assist in coaching and mentoring junior lawyers.
• Maintain professional relationships with judges, peers, and the wider legal community.

Required profile

• Hold a PAL2 approval level and be qualified to practice law in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated passion for criminal justice and empathy for a diverse client base.
• Confidence in building credibility with courts and colleagues.
• Willingness to share expertise and collaborate on legal issues.
