Lead Structural Engineer – Transport

About the role

SMEC is seeking an experienced Lead Structural Engineer to head the design and delivery of bridge and civil structure projects across New Zealand. This senior position combines technical excellence with commercial awareness, guiding multidisciplinary teams, managing client relationships, and expanding the firm’s structural capability in the transport sector.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of bridge and civil structures from concept through detailed design.
• Provide technical leadership and oversight for multidisciplinary project teams.
• Manage quality, coordination, and integration of structural and related disciplines.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and industry partners.
• Contribute to business development by leading proposals and supporting growth initiatives.

Required profile

• Proven experience as a senior structural engineer, preferably in transport infrastructure.
• Strong commercial acumen and ability to manage client expectations.
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills.
• Relevant engineering degree and professional registration.
