Head of Culture and Language

About the role

The Head of Culture and Language will lead and strengthen cultural responsiveness, bilingual education and language development across Deaf Education New Zealand’s national school network. Reporting to the Deputy Principal – Culture & Language, this permanent full‑time senior leadership position can be based in Christchurch or Auckland and involves national travel.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of culturally responsive and bilingual learning environments.
• Strengthen the integration and use of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) across the organisation.
• Support staff capability in culturally sustaining pedagogy and language development.
• Build strong partnerships with Deaf communities, iwi, whānau and cultural organisations.
• Lead cultural events, language initiatives and community engagement activities.
• Support inclusive education practices that improve outcomes for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners.
• Use data and evaluation to inform programme development and learner success.
• Lead change initiatives and contribute to the organisation’s strategic direction.

Required profile

• Collaborative, values‑driven leader with deep understanding of Deaf Culture and bilingual education.
• Fluency in NZSL and lived experience in the Deaf world.
• Strong knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice.
• Excellent relationship management, communication and facilitation skills.
• Integrity, authenticity and passion for inclusive education.
