Court Security Officer – Napier District & High Court

About the role

As a Court Security Officer you will help create a safe, secure environment for the Napier District & High Court, ensuring that justice can be accessed without intimidation or violence. You will work alongside a diverse team, interacting with the public, legal professionals and other agencies.

Key responsibilities

• Engage with a wide range of visitors and build respectful relationships.
• Perform security screening and operate CCTV, electronic access‑control and metal‑detector equipment.
• Liaise with Police, Corrections, lawyers and judicial officers to support safe court proceedings.
• Patrol public areas, conduct building security checks and respond to duress alarms.
• Identify, mitigate and report security, health and safety threats and incidents.

Required profile

• Customer‑service mindset; security, defence or government experience is a plus but not required.
• Confidence with technology and ability to use de‑escalation techniques.
• Physical fitness to meet full‑contact officer safety training requirements.
• Clean New Zealand driver’s licence and criminal record.
• Understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural considerations, especially Tikanga Māori.

Required skills

• Operation of CCTV and electronic access‑control systems.
• Use of X‑ray machines, walk‑through and handheld metal detectors.
• Security qualifications including SRBA, RT and handcuffing.
• De‑escalation techniques.
